Warm, late spring wind blew across the badlands, tossing the shrubs around. The young stallion stood still and silent, barely breathing. His brown eyes were closed, and from a distance it would appear that he was asleep. And the animal that assumed this would be half right. But Rochann would never allow himself to fall completely asleep in such an open setting. That was just asking for trouble, and trouble wasn't something that he wanted. Rochann avoided trouble like the plague and would sooner run from a fight than stand up for himself. In his short life, Rochann had never so much as been in a play fight, so what would make him think he could win a real fight? Sometimes he wished he could have grown up in a herd like a normal foal, that way he would know things he needed to know, but that just wasn't the case and there was no point wishing for things that just weren't going to happen.
With a snort the bay opened his eyes and looked around. The sun was high in the sky and beating down unmercifully on his back. Spring time was coming to a close, summer was just a few weeks away. Honestly, he dreaded summer. It had always been his least favorite season. It was just too hot. But oh well, it didn't really last any longer than the other seasons, and fall would come around to cool everything down. Rochann lowered his head slowly, and began to nibble on the sparse grass below him.

Jaybird picked her way through the barren lands of the Badlands, her fragile frame uneasy in her surroundings. The air was filled with the scent of stallions. Her head was lowered, her tail tucked as far under her at she could tuck it, it's orange-like strands swaying in the light late-summer breeze. Her coat shined in the sunlight, the white just behind her shoulder glowing brightly, the highlights of her deep brown body hairs glistening. Her white legs were dusty, though. A thin layer of brown coated them from all of her walking.
She hadn't a clue why she was here. She'd been wandering and had accidentally ended up here. Her navigational skills were zero to say the least. Getting lost in her father's own territory proved that fact pretty well.
But when the shine of a fellow horse, a bay stallion, caught her eye, her head raised and her ears pricked forward. He looked like he was starting to fall asleep. But he looked gentle, not a big, powerful stallion that would have intimidated her. Keeping her eyes on him, her head raised, her legs moved up from a sluggish walk to a brisk trot, her gate carrying her forward smoothly, long strides covering ground quickly. She really only took a couple of cantering strides before transitioning quickly back to a walk as she approached.
"Hello!" She greeted him, her deep brown eyes shining with delight to have found a fellow equine that wasn't going to - as far as she assumed - harm her. She'd seen her friend meet a horrible end, but you could never have guessed that from the innocent, beaming look she gave.
