"war is peace, freedom is slavery, ignorance is strength"
it's 1964, and the nuclear war that immediately followed the cuban missile
crisis has finally come to a stalemate. the world has been left devastated,
and -- with many millions of people lost -- divided into three conglomerates:
eurasia, oceania, and airstrip one (what used to be known as the united king-
dom). a large mass of land still remains unclaimed, and the non-nuclear battle
over land rages on... but there's something else stirring up in airstrip one.
within a few months after the nuclear warfare had ceased, there seemed to
be a new power in town, that called itself big brother. a few people, at a time,
would go missing, and would come back only to try and sell this notion of
loving big brother to them. and despite initial hesitation, post-war chaos won,
and before anyone had even realized it, almost everyone was consumed in
this new institution that was big brother's oligarchy. complacently. there
seemed to be whispered rumors about torture and dream-extraction -- none
of which made much sense -- but it was enough to get a few group of people
skeptical of this new authority. big brother continues to redirect any dissatis-
faction of their law enforcement towards the "real" enemy -- that is, eurasia
and oceania, and all citizens live in a state of delusion, believing anything that
is fed to them from their telescreens. it's not like they have much choice, either,
because if they aren't careful, the ministry members or the thought police might
come after them for treason. people still go missing and come back battered
up and dazed about their state of mind, and no one except for the speak easy
seem to realize that something is off. and big brother's eye is always watching...
